Types of facelift procedures
Facelifts and facial rejuvenation are among the most popular anti-aging procedures in North America, especially among middle-aged adults who wish to reverse the effects of aging.
Over time, skin loses its natural elasticity as collagen production slows or stops altogether. When this happens, fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin, and dark spots can spread across the face. Fortunately, there are different types of facelifts, both surgical and non-surgical, that can help restore a natural, youthful appearance.
If you are unhappy with your appearance and want to make positive changes in your life, a facelift could be the right choice for you!
Main categories of facelifts
Like other facial plastic surgery procedures, a facelift can be divided into two distinct categories: surgical and non-surgical. It is up to the patient and their doctor to decide on a case-by-case basis which option is more appropriate.
Some patients opt for a non-surgical facelift for personal or medical reasons, while others may be quite comfortable with a surgical facelift. Ultimately, this is something that should be discussed with the facial surgeon during the initial consultation.
The key is for you to honestly think about what your goals are with this procedure and what you hope to achieve. Based on this, and after a thorough analysis of your facial structure, the plastic surgeon will indicate the best options for you.
However, before choosing a particular plastic surgeon, you should, in your own interest, seek several opinions in order to put all the chances on your side. Remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to plastic surgery, and plastic surgeons usually specialize in a particular area.
Types of facelifts
If you are considering a facelift, you should be aware of the nine types of facelifts. Keep in mind that each type of facelift involves a different part of the facial structure.
Cheek lift
Like the midface lift, the cheek lift aims to improve the appearance of the cheekbones by removing or reducing fine lines and midface wrinkles. The cheek lift can help you achieve the plump, toned appearance you desire by eliminating under-eye bags and reshaping nasolabial folds so that they are less pronounced.
S-lift
This procedure is called "S-lift" because an S-shaped incision is made in the lower half of the face, around the neck and jawline. This allows the surgeon to separate the top layer of skin from the underlying muscles and facial tissue. The goal of this procedure is to firm the skin, remove excess fat cells, and reshape the underlying muscles and tissue to create smooth, wrinkle-free skin.
Deep Facelift/SMAS
The goal of a deep facelift is to eliminate loose skin around the chin and neck by lifting and strengthening the loose muscles in that area of the face. In a deep and shallow facelift, the surgeon goes under the musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS).
The surgeon places the SMAS layer under the skin near the smile and anger muscles and positions, shapes, and smoothes the SMAS layer to eliminate wrinkles and give you a more youthful and radiant appearance.
Liquid facelift
The liquid facelift is by far the most popular form of facial rejuvenation currently performed in North America. The Liquid Facelift is known for its simplicity, speed, and noninvasiveness.
It involves the use of an injectable serum such as Botox, Restylane, Dysport, or Juvederm, which is injected into the face to treat the problem area. These serums usually contain dosed concentrations of collagen or hyaluronic acid that stimulate collagen production and promote skin elasticity.
Midface lift
As the name suggests, the midface lift focuses on the middle part of the face, particularly the cheeks. However, unlike a cheek implant, implants are not placed in the cheeks to fill them in. The plastic surgeon will remove excess tissue or use existing tissue to firm the cheeks, counteract sagging and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles.
The midface lift is particularly suitable for patients without wrinkles or marionette lines. However, it can also be performed in combination with procedures to remove cheek lines and marionette lines.
Jawline rejuvenation
For most people, especially women, the signs of aging show up on the jawline and décolleté. Jaw rejuvenation involves removing excess fat cells from the neck through neck liposuction. The purpose of this procedure is to allow the surgeon enough space to give the jawline a softer shape and contour.
Skin lift
Skin lifting also involves the lower part of the face, including the jawline and neck. Discrete incisions are made around the hairline and ears. From here, the surgeon separates the top layer of skin from the underlying muscles and tissues. Excess skin is cut, removed, and disposed of.
The remaining skin is stretched in the incision areas. Finally, the incisions are closed with stitches. Stretching the skin has much the same effect as stretching clothes: The skin is tightened and wrinkles are permanently eliminated.
Mini facelift
This is a surgical facelift technique that allows the surgeon to expertly tighten and smooth the skin through small, discreet incisions below the hairline while removing excess tissue. Mini-lifts are generally effective in reducing or completely eliminating cheeks.
Wrinkles usually appear around the lower half of the cheeks and mouth, as collagen production decreases with age.
Temple or eyebrow lift
Because the temples and eyebrows are so close together, removing wrinkles in one area of the face will also affect the other. If your eyebrows are drooping or too low, this may be the right procedure for you.
An excellent alternative to the much more invasive and time-consuming brow lift is the eyebrow lift, which is much quicker and simpler. Through a small incision along the hairline, the skin and underlying muscles are lifted to relax the drooping skin of the eyelids.
